Dear people,
we want to thank everyone both in the Netherlands and in America who have sent their condolences either in Dutch, English or a “mixture” of both.
We are forever indebted and grateful to Sheri, Clyde and Brandi Culkin and their family for all the love and friendship they gave to Dan in the past and for all they are doing right now to make things easier for us, Dan’s family.
We feel so privileged that Sheri and Clyde and Brandi and Clyde together with Karrie, Steve and Bryce Rue have honoured Dan’s last wishes and have found the perfect spot to scatter his ashes, in the Arkansas River and in Hayden Creek. We regret that we weren’t able to be present to pay tribute to Dan ourselves.
We had loved to come over to “His wide open spaces of the United States of America”.

We know our brother would have wanted to end his eulogy with his favourite Dutch KCT Commando motto: “now or never”. So here it is:
“NUNC AUT NUNQUAM!!!!!”
Beste mensen,
we willen iedereen, zowel in Nederland als in Amerika bedanken die hun condoleances hebben gestuurd. Of ze nu in het nederlands, engels of een mix van beide waren geschreven.
We zijn Dan’s goede vrienden Sheri, Clyde en Brandi Culkin en hun familie voor eeuwig dankbaar voor wat ze voor Dan hebben gedaan en voor alle hulp die ze ons, zijn zusters nu nog geven.
We zijn blij dat Sheri en Clyde samen met Brandi en Clyde en met Karrie, Steve en Bryce Rue Dan’s laatste wens hebben uitgevoerd en een deel van zijn as hebben uitgestrooid op een perfecte plek, in de Arkansas River en in Hayden Creek.
We betreuren het dat we niet zelf aanwezig konden zijn om onze broer te eren.
We waren graag naar zijn geliefde “wide open spaces of the United States of America” gekomen.

Oom Dan was een legende in de familie.
Door omstandigheden heb ik in 2021 contact met hem gezocht, per brief.
Dankbaar ben ik voor de correspondentie die hieruit voortvloeide. Heb ik oom Dan toch nog een beetje leren kennen!
Ooit had ik hem willen opzoeken in Amerika, het mag helaas niet meer zo zijn.
Op de dag dat het bericht van zijn overlijden ons ter ore kwam ontving ik, die middag, een laatste kaartje van oom Dan.
Forever wondering what winter will bring.

Gecondoleerd met dit grote verlies. Ik had het voorrecht Dan in Amsterdam te mogen ontmoeten. Jaren later ontmoette ik veteranen van het KCT Roosendaal, die hem kenden. "Zeer bedankt voor de post met o.a. mooie foto's, Dan. Je was een mooi mens. Zeer dapper. Wat een avonturen. Wat een belevenissen. You did it your way. R.I.P. man! “Oom” Dan,
Als goede vriend van mijn vader herinner ik je al van kinds af aan. Op latere leeftijd inspireerde je mij met de verhalen als commando’s onder elkaar. Je wijze lessen op survivalgebied nam ik mee in mijn “rugzakje”. Jammer dat we elkaar door omstandigheden niet konden zien bij de laatste commando reünie in 2017. Ik keek er naar uit om je te zien volgende jaar op dit groene samenzijn! Helaas mag het niet zo zijn…
Ik ga je missen Dan. Fysiek ben je er niet meer, maar je zal doorgaan als een legende! Nuncaut Nunquam.

Beste Dan, als oud-commando (Liplg 74-4) ging je naam altijd bij ons rond. Dat gebeurt nog steeds bij de mannen van het KCT. Ook al hebben we elkaar niet persoonlijk gekend, we zijn familie. Zo beleef ik ook je zelfgekozen dood. Je zult door de velden lopen, je in de wildernis begeven.... Waar dan ook, houd ze bezig Dan! Nunc aut Nunquam!

Dear Dan,
Shocked, but not suprised….
Realizing we would never ever see you again, not being able to come over to your place, as Peter and I had planned.
I remember your big, boyish smile the first time we met, in the backyard of our home in the Netherlands( after living abroad for several years), me, as a kid, making “petal soup”.
You sure made an impression on me somehow…..
In the years to come we saw each other of and on, till you moved tot he US.
Many birthdaycards and later on, me growing older, also letters and newspapercuttings, political, global articles, but also funny cartoons and pictures of interest or pictures of you. Always interested in our lives.
You were there for me when I needed support and help at the time I lived in the US. You drove all the way up (or actually down), to be there with and for me. Eventhough I thanked you for that at the time, you probably never realised how much this meant to me.
We also share the same interests, like photography, plants, nature, animals, culture, art, landscapes, clouds, history, poems…it’s all in the family I guess!
I had planned to phone you in the same week you actually said goodbye to life on earth. Won’t be able to do so anymore…..
You’ve had an incredible impact and inspiration on me and so many other family members and people.
Lieve, Dan, geniet van jouw new journey met de mensen die jou al een tijd missen, wetende dat jij op wat voor manier dan ook aan ons laat weten dat je er nog steeds voor ons zal zijn.
Jij en ik weten dat wij een speciaal “lijntje” hebben…..
Ook nu weer afwisselend in het Engels en Nederlands, zoals jij en ik pratend en schrijvend deden.

Dan was the best friend of my grandfather (Adriaan van Grieken). My grandpa often told stories about them and as a kid, Dan and I used to write (letters) each other often. I loved his amazing stories about his time in the Army.
Dan was a man I absolutely looked up to in my life. Rest in peace Dan. We’ll miss you.

Thank you for being such a great and fun uncle! You thought me to be adventurous and inspired me to do things that others (including my parents) found insane; motivating me to take a free fall above the Royal Gorge definitely tops that list! That’s one of the memories that I’ll cherish forever. I have so many more good memories of you. From visiting an ancient Indian tribe to taking me bouldering. And let’s not forget all the selfies we took during the last time we visited you! You found the selfie stick ridiculous, but you happily posed for pictures and even held me so I wouldn’t fall off Pikes Peak when trying to take the perfect selfie… I had hope that we could take more pictures together during another reunion, but unfortunately our efforts to fly you over to the Netherlands in 2019 didn’t work out. Thank you for the memories, the cards and the phone calls. I hope you’ve found peace now. I’ll miss you, Oom Dan.

Mijn oom Dan was een van de moedigste en stoerste personen die ik kende. Dit blijkt ook uit deze foto, waar oom Dan helemaal links in de hoek staat op het puntje van Pikes Peak. Tijdens deze wandeltocht vertelde mijn oom over al zijn avonturen van vroeger. Hoe hij op katten joeg in het bos en slangenvlees had gegeten.
Verder wil ik mijn oom bedanken voor alle vakanties naar Colorado en alle leuke verjaardagskaarten met krantenknipsels. Voor hoe hij ons de rode rotsen heeft laten zien met de kissing camels en hoe hij speciaal voor z’n nichtjes mee op zoek ging naar Minnetonka’s (schoenen die toen hip waren). Mijn oom was geen shopping fan, maar dit liet hij voor ons niet merken. Ook stuurde hij elk jaar een kaart voor mijn verjaardag en dan hadden we daarna nog even een gesprek aan de telefoon. Het zal dit jaar best raar zijn zonder verjaardagskaart uit Colorado...
Lieve oom Dan, nogmaals heel veel dank voor alles en ik zal u missen. Rest In Peace.

Dear Sweet Dan, we got to know each other through my father Adriaan van Grieken, also an Oud Commando. You were dear friends and shared your passion for the Commando's. You wrote letters to each other and my father visited you in Colorado. When Adriaan got ill you came to visit him, a very sweet memory for my father and my self. I was impressed to hear your life story, my father told me all about you. Since his death in 2016 you and I kept in touch and started to write each other letters, with pictures, newspaper articles, calendars and poems. I got to know you as a wonderful, sweet and caring person. It was always a happy moment to receive your mail in my mailbox, it gave me so much joy!! Your wisdom, your words and your view on life was so special and unique. The message of your death came as a shock, but I am so happy to have been part of your life. You will be missed for the special person that you are!! I wish your family and friends all the best. To you dear sweet Dan I can only say: Nunc aut Nunquam!

Beste Dan,
Ik zal je me blijven herinneren als één van de meest punctuele, oprechte en moedigste personen die ik ken.
Iedere verjaardag was jij de "eerste" met kaarten en met de knipsels die je steevast meestuurde.
Je was ook altijd "in" voor buitenissige dingen, zoals het gaan eten bij een restaurant, waar ze niet het voor ons Europeanen gebruikelijke voedsel serveren of helemaal naar de top van een berg rijden, via wegen die, ik absoluut niet zelf wilde rijden.
Zo heb je mij en mijn gezin heel wat bijzonders in jouw omgeving laten zien. Daar zijn we allen dankbaar voor.
Moed stond ook altijd in jouw vaandel, zeker de wijze waarop je het tijdelijke met het eeuwige hebt verwisseld getuigt daarvan.
Jammer dat je er niet meer in persoon bent, maar we zullen je nooit vergeten.

Baas,
Ik hoop dat je nu, onder ‘luchten van Ruysdael’ en ‘Cecil B. de Mille clouds’ nonchalant leunend tegen een knotwilg een ‘powerdog’ staat te nuttigen.
Op de achtergrond hoor je zachtjes eindelijk weer een ballade van Joan Baez, ze wordt een beetje overstemd door een colonne doedelzakspelers, die- uiteraard gekleed in ‘Black Watch tartans’- aan komen marcheren.
Heeft Jan Dirk persoonlijk nog een enorme kudde bizons voor je kunnen regelen?
Nu kun je weer uit vliegtuigen springen, desnoods zonder parachute, je kunt weer klimmen naar de ‘Kussende Kamelen’ of afdalen naar ‘de Grot van de Poetjes’.
Doe mama, papa, Will en al die anderen de groetjes, wat zullen ze blij zijn je te zien. Vergeet niet om Droppie van mij een aai te geven, pas wel op dat ze je handen niet weer tot bloedens toe open krabt. Mama zal haar voor de gelegenheid wel een strik om hebben gedaan; ‘pimpelpaars met gele stippeltjes?’
Baas, dank je dat je mijn grote broer bent en dank voor alle herinneringen, ik zal je nooit vergeten.
‘I guess you’re not in Kansas anymore’, geniet met volle teugen van dit nieuwe avontuur, ’jouw Vlucht over de Gebroken Waslijn’ en wees volmaakt gelukkig……..!
